Interiors and Interior Architecture after Covid-19
European University of Lefke Interior Architecture Department Head Asst. Assoc. Dr. M. Selen Abbasoğlu Ermiyagil answered the questions about “interiors and interior architecture” after Covid-19.
1.What will be the need for the reorganization of large public spaces such as airports, convention centers, hotels, hospitals, gyms and offices (open offices) after the Covid 19?
In the public areas, more touch technology, for example automatic doors, voice operated elevators and light switches, keyless entry from the doors will be preferred. Self-cleaning bathrooms will be used in hotel venues. In places such as congress centers, antibacterial fabrics and surface coatings will be preferred in order to provide hygiene.
Open offices started to be developed in the 1950s in line with factors such as increasing creativity, sharing and increasing production. After this pandemic, more places will be given to private spaces, corridors in office buildings and dividers. It is discussed in the world that places will be designed by considering the individual distances of individuals.
2. What happened in living spaces after Covid 19? Compliance of existing residences to the home-office work order?
The spaces where people live and use have always been very important, but in this process, the importance of living spaces and their interior design has reappeared. The interior spaces where they live, the personal space of each individual living in the living space, the adequacy / usefulness of these spaces, actually emerge as a situation that many people have just become aware of. Certain hours of the day were spent in living spaces. This time zone was in the evening hours and generally eating and sleeping places were actively used. Therefore, users were looking at living spaces from different angles and actively using different spaces. Until now, the places that they deemed incomplete and tried to design were the places they frequently used during these time intervals. They did not even realize the usefulness of these places, their suitability for all users of the place, and how much of the areas they are not using. While all family members are together, we become aware of whether our living spaces (our homes) are sufficient and / or not designed for our needs. As a result of these different awareness, the inability of the living space to meet our physical, visual and social needs, and its inadequacy create unrest and unhappiness on individuals. At this point, the relationship of interiors with psychology and its effect on human psychology emerges. Especially in accordance with the home office working system, it was revealed that many places were not designed.
3. How will the interior design profession be after the pandemic?
How important it was for the interiors that we live in, in line with the Covid 19 pandemic, to meet our physical, visual and social needs and to design these spaces. We realize once again how much interior designers, which we may not care about until now, are necessary. It has once again been revealed that it is a profession group that designs the interior spaces for the users, which can be used in the best way for the users, considering their personal preferences, designs their peace and comfort, and finds solutions to make the most suitable designs according to their aesthetic appearance, and how important it actually is.
4. Does the profession of interior design have a psychological effect?
The suitability of the colors preferred in the interiors to the function of the space, the compatibility of the other materials used with the furniture, the intensity of the language unity affect the users of the space as a whole.
5. What is Interior Architecture? What does the Interior Architect do?
Interior architecture is an art in itself with the use of mathematical geometries, colors and textures by combining design criteria with an aesthetic and artistic approach. The biggest difference of this art from other arts is that it reflects its own identity and soul to the living space, the place used. If the user has shaped his own life with the designer in this place where he lives and / or uses, he can continue happily, peacefully and comfortably.
