“Media and Violence” evaluated at EUL
The first day of “Media and Violence Symposium” organized by European University of Lefke- Faculty of Communication Sciences commenced on 27 of October Thursday with the opening speeches held in EUL Rauf Raif Denktaş Education Complex Conference Hall.
The Dean of Communication Sciences Faculty, Prof. Dr. Belkıs Ayhan Tarhan, who has realized the opening speech of the symposium, has stated how the violence is represented and re-produced through media thus analyzing cinema, photography and football which undermines the weak ones via physical and mental violence; especially women and children, throughout the symposium also by defining various aspects of violence as well. Tarhan have thanked those who contributed to the organization and also to the scientific counselling council and symposium; especially to the honorary president of the symposium- Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Yükselen.
Lawyer and Academician, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tufan Erhürman, who has emphasized that the leading publicity platform of “Media and violence” is through televisions, and have stressed during his speech that despite all efforts and measures applied in law, the weakness of legal implications against violence in media is inefficient; no matter all sorts of positive regulations implicated. Erhürman underlined that despite the fine contribution of the law to the aspect of media ad violence, the real solution, he stated, lays upon the efforts of formal and broad education, ethical values of philosophy, administrative supervision and media ombudsman.
The first panel which was moderated by BRT News Supervisor Efdal Keser, have continued with the presentation of Near East University- Member of the Faculty, Assist. Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özejder, who covered topics of the conflict resulted due to media and violence, estranging human from violence, the source of violence in life, the language of violence in politics, online journalism and other violence related topics.
The Member of Media Ethic Council Perihan Aziz who have remarked that media alters the behaviors and approaches of the people, also stressed that media is more integrated to the Daily life of the people in line with the developing technology thus legitimizing incidents and normalizing them. Also presenting sample cases from the televisions, Aziz have explained violence in depth. Muazzez Seldağ also the Member of Media Ethic Council have stated that they as the Media Ethic Council are assessing those complaints about the violence in television broadcasts and applying relevant precautions, Seldağ also mentioned that violence is a taught behavior which is significantly triggered by media therefore even with the incidents with a newsworthiness must be first filtered through the auto control of the news presenter.

Member of the Faculty of Medipol University Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuba Kalçık and Member of the Faculty of Girne American University Dr. Ümmü Altan Bayrak have presented “The New Weapon of Terror; Social Media- Case of DAESH”, Member of the Faculty of Gazi University Dr. Pelin Öztürk Göçmen presented “The Presentation Approach of the Terror Attack Images on Turkey via New Media” and Communication Expert Özdemir Tokel have presented “Media, The Reputation Murderer” during the second panel of the symposium held in EUL Cinema Hall and under the moderation of Member of the EUL Communication Faculty, by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elif Asude Tunca.
The other panel which was moderated by Prof. Dr. Belkıs Ayhan Tarhan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elif Asude Tunca have presented “ Legal and Institutional Regulations Implemented on Media in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and The Reflection on Media Products”, Member of the Faculty of Yeditepe University Assist. Prof. Dr. Özlem Akkaya presented “Ethical Entrepreneurship and Violence: Towards from Silence to “Discourse Explosion” in accordance with Mainstream Bisexuality in Turkish Media”, Dr. Ümmi Albayrak and Assist. Prof. Dr. Tuba Kalçık “Political Hate Discourse in New Media Environment: Case of Reddediyoruz Platform” and Teaching Staff of Kocaeli University Tümay Mercan presented “Re-production of Violence in Social Media and Future Anxiety”.
