In her interview at EUL Ekingen emphasized “The necessity of producing New Current Objects in order to keep the Cypriot Products alive”
Head of Cyprus Business Women Association Şenay Ekingen attended the interview which was organized by the European University of Lefke (EUL) Social Services Club on the occasion of World Social Work Day as a speaker. The interview was moderated by the Chairperson of the European University of Lefke Department of Social Services Prof. Dr. Şengül Hablemitoğlu.
Hablemitoğlu: Emphasizing the importance of human relations is a great responsibility of Social Workers.
Pointing out that many issues that can be addressed together with local problems by reducing global and local questions constitutes the theme of World Social Work day, Hablemitoğlu said that “This year’s theme is to emphasize the importance of human relations. The following days will constitute a year of discussion of what can be done to support these relations, especially by social workers”. Hablemitoğlu pointed out that human relations are going through a period where they are gradually decreasing and undergoing a metamorphosis and added that “Emphasizing the importance of human relations is a great responsibility of Social Workers”.
Ekingen: I just wanted to be myself and free
Stating that she was born in a small village, grew up in a family which had six children and after her high school education she had an experience of 10 years of civil servant, Ekingen said that “As a result of some events I wanted to build my own business overnight, I thought what I could do while setting up my business. Since I took the decision on my own, it had to be a job that didn’t require capital”. Ekingen also pointed out that she didn’t wanted a lot of gaining and added that “I just wanted to be myself and free. I thought I could do whatever I wanted. Then I thought I’d be free without limits. Ekingen stated that at the time she decided to establish her own business she was thinking freely and added that she didn’t get approval and there were opposing ideas in her home. Ekingen further said that “But now I work with my son and my wife. They came to my job, the work I did”.
Pointing out that handcrafts are very popular in Cyprus, Ekingen said that “I grew up in this culture. Then I asked myself what do I know? And the answer was Lefkara. I thought to myself I will do this. On the night of February 6, 1987, I took a decision and started my education and established by business”.
Ekingen pointed out that she completed the 32nd year in the field of hand crafts and added that “Today, we are producing many objects that you can think of today, from traditional embroidery and under-cup embroidery. The reason for this is the small size of our market”. Ekingen finally underlined the necessity of producing new current objects in order to keep the Cypriot products alive.
At the end of the interview Ekingen was presented with a certificate of appreciation and a bouquet of flowers by Hablemitoğlu.
