Faculty of Arts & Sciences

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences was established in 1991, just a year after our university was founded in Lefke, one of the naturally richest and beautiful corners of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Faculty today houses three major departments; the Department of Turkish Language and Literature, the Department of History and the Department of Psychology.

Setting out from the notion that mankind is a “social and cultural creature” and adopting the universally accepted missions of Arts and Science Faculties, the EUL’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences offers the means to acquire knowledge, carry out academic studies and research in the field of social sciences. More importantly, it aims to raise young generations equipped with the knowledge and knowhow of using the information they have acquired.

It is a known fact that universities provide an indisputable value to the areas, environment and surroundings in which they are located in. Our faculty, in line with its sense of duty collaborates with civil society organizations and institutions, both at the local and national level, to provide a social and cultural service to the local community.

In addition, the faculty constantly updates its institutional structure to accommodate the demands and needs of changing times. Departments operating under the Arts and Science Faculty periodically attend and contribute to scientific congresses, symposiums and conferences, both at the national and international level.

As for the education activities of our respective departments, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences’ Department of History is the first amongst the universities in the TRNC. The Department which first commenced classes during the 1998-1999 academic year has since thrived to create a contemporary history ecole, bringing to life various lasting projects. The country’s rich historical heritage has naturally allowed the creation of a distinguished tradition and accumulation of knowledge within the history department.

Students are offered an education in both the Turkish classics and contemporary literature works, bringing them together with their writers and authors. The department with both its undergraduate and graduate programmes raises the linguists, literature experts and writers of the future. Intensive efforts to open a new graduate program on Contemporary Turkish Dialects are also continuing.

The Psychology Department, with a strong team of academic staff is the newest addition to the Faculty having started offering classes at the beginning of the 2013-2014 academic year. The department aims to raise competent psychologists in the field. Moreover, the Psychology Department’s counseling services project aims to provide psychological counseling to all students enrolled at the university, should it be required, is one of the university’s many social responsibility projects.

In addition to the education programmes offered by the respective faculty department, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences offers elective courses such as Turkish Literature for students from other faculties.
The “Atatürk Principles and Revolutionary History” is a mandatory course for all Turkish speaking students at the university and the “The History of Turkey and Cyprus” and “Turkish” courses which all Turkish speaking students are required to take shows how important the faculty is for the university.
