“Holistic Approach to Heart Health” Symposium Held at EUL

The scientific symposium titled “A Holistic Approach to Heart Health: Structure, Disease, Surgery, and Rehabilitation”, organized by the Faculty of Medicine at the European University of Lefke (EUL), was held at the EUL Cinema Hall with intensive participation. The event provided up-to-date insights on cardiovascular health from an interdisciplinary perspective, covering topics ranging from heart anatomy and surgical practices to preventive cardiology and rehabilitation.
The symposium began with an opening speech by Prof. Dr. Rümeysa Demirdamar, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at EUL. In her remarks, Prof. Dr. Demirdamar emphasized the importance of multidisciplinary approaches and academic collaborations in protecting heart health.
Following the opening, the scientific sessions of the symposium commenced. Asst. Prof. Dr. Musa Muhtaroğlu, a faculty member at EUL, delivered a presentation titled “Fundamental Principles of Heart Anatomy”, offering an overview of the heart’s macroscopic structure, its main sections, and clinically significant anatomical relations.
In the second session, Prof. Dr. Emir Özgür Barış Ökçün from the Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Cardiology Institute presented on “Heart Diseases and Preventive Approaches”, evaluating current strategies for preventing cardiovascular diseases and their impact on public health.
Subsequently, Op. Dr. Mehmet Arıkbuka from Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital, affiliated with the Ministry of Health of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), gave a talk titled “Current Approaches in Cardiac Surgery”, in which he discussed advanced surgical techniques and clinical practices using case examples.
The final presentation was delivered by Prof. Dr. Hülya Harutoğlu, a member of YÖDAK (Higher Education Planning, Evaluation, Accreditation and Coordination Council). Her session, “The Role and Importance of Cardiac Rehabilitation,” provided comprehensive recommendations on the rehabilitation process following surgical or medical treatment of cardiac patients.
The event concluded with a Q&A session and a general evaluation. In his closing remarks, symposium coordinator Asst. Prof. Dr. Musa Muhtaroğlu stated, “We believe that such events, centered around a holistic approach to heart health, contribute significantly to medical education and public awareness.”
