EUL organized a workshop themed “From Numbers to an Image”
EUL Students thought student groups of 4-5 years old how to draw images from numbers
European University of Lefke Pre-School Teaching Club organized a workshop themed “From Numbers to an Image” at Lefke İstiklal Primary School and Yedidalga Primary School. EUL students thought approximately 80 4-5 years old how to draw images from numbers and gained a different experience.
Çağanağa: Both EUL students and kids learned with practicing
Giving information about the workshop, Head of Pre-School Teaching Department and Advisor of the Club Assist. Prof. Dr. Çağda Kıvanç Çağanağa stated the point of origin of the workshop as student-centered education approach. Çağanağa emphasized that EUL students are individuals who are far from stereotypical teaching methods, embracing the philosophy of learning by living and practicing and added that the students have always done original works to make a difference and they have been supporting the development of the community they live in with their creative ideas. Çağanağa also pointed out that in the activity which lasted for one and a half hour, both EUL students and kids learned with practicing.
Çağanağa: Perceiving numbers with the help of art was the goal of the workshop
Çağanağa said that “There is a need to use artistic works in the field of education in order to facilitate learning, to enable effective and meaningful learning, and to embody abstract concepts when the importance of learning by living and practice is taken into consideration”. Çağanağa also pointed out that little kids propound mathematical concepts with means of game, speech, imitation, dramatize, and ways of art and added that they try to teach children in the pre-school term the skills and concepts in the framework of programs in accordance with their age levels, and that one of them is art. Pointing out that perceiving numbers with the help of art was the goal of the workshop themed “From Numbers to an Image”, Çağanağa said the child’s ability to recognize the nature through play, a feature which is innate, is generally not taken into consideration in the process of learning in schools and as a result of this the child falls into the passive role.
Çağanağa finally said that “However, in the process of art activity, the child actively learns by playing and living as it is in the game. Mental activities such as being creative and making decisions are activities that can be developed in the arts. Art is an effective method of teaching the new concepts within the capacity and capacity of the child to achieve their natural, physical, mental and spiritual development”.
