EUL Academician Kaygısız, discussed the “Importance of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation in Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain”

European University of Lefke (EUL) Faculty of Health Sciences Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department Lecturer Asst. Prof. Dr. Beliz Belgen Kaygisiz gave information on “The Importance of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation in Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain”.

Stating that low back pain is one of the most common problems among musculoskeletal system injuries, Kaygisiz said, “Today, 75-85% of the adult population experience low back pain at some time in their lives and 80-85% of these people recur in the following time. . She stated that low back pain, which is one of the most common health problems, carefree is among the important causes of medical expenses, functional insufficiencies, loss of work power and disability, as well as limitation of movement due to pain fear, decrease in quality of life, depression, and decrease in sleep patterns. “Chronic low back pain, which has been shown as an important cause of workforce loss in developed societies in recent years, is also reported as the most common cause of functional disability under the age of 45” in the community-based studies conducted in recent years. She stated that it improves in the first 6 weeks, and in 5%, symptoms and functional insufficiency continue and become chronic.

Effective results are obtained in the treatment of low back pain with dynamic back and spine exercises performed with the active participation of patients during physiotherapy applications.

“Back pain, which lasted 6 months in the past, was considered chronic, today this period has decreased to 6 weeks. It has been reported that people with chronic low back pain limit their activities, resulting in a decrease in muscle strength, endurance and flexibility. In addition, in daily life activities such as standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending and weight lifting, posture disorders and deterioration in body mechanics can be observed. She pointed out that the main goal is to improve the disability and psychosocial problems and to bring the patients with chronic low back pain to active life and working life.

Kaygısız continued her words as follows, “In the treatment of low back pain, conservative treatment programs and preventive rehabilitation programs that include medical treatment / drug therapy and different physiotherapy applications constitute an important part of the treatment. It is stated in many recent studies that effective results are obtained in the treatment of low back pain and that pain and recurrence can be prevented with dynamic back and spine exercises performed with the active participation of patients during physiotherapy applications.

Kaygısız: The most important principle in physiotherapy programs of patients with low back pain is to give the patient the most appropriate exercise program.

“The most important principle in physiotherapy programs of patients with low back pain is to give the patient the most appropriate exercise program because the effectiveness of each exercise method is different.” He stated that exercise therapy is the most frequently preferred treatment method in physiotherapy programs and constitutes an important part of the program due to its positive effects on pain, muscle strength, flexibility, endurance, functionality and quality of life and its safety.

Lastly, Kaygısız said “Protecting the problem area that causes low back pain is as important as treating the back pain. Within the framework of preventive rehabilitation practices carried out by physiotherapists, it is very important to recognize and prevent the factors that initiate and sustain pain in terms of prevention of low back pain. In terms of preventing low back pain, it is also very important to evaluate the strength, endurance, flexibility of the trunk muscles supporting the spine, and the stabilization of the spine, and to support these areas with the applications to be made.
